What are grounding barefoot shoes?

Grounding barefoot shoes are flexible, wide toe footwear with a conductive sole that keeps your body electrically connected with the earth on suitable natural surfaces. They combine the natural movement principles of barefoot shoes with a conductive pathway created through materials such as graphene, leather and silver thread.

Most conventional shoes separate your body from the ground with thick, insulating soles. This protects your feet, but it also interrupts the conductive connection that occurs when you walk directly on grass, soil or sand.

How does the grounding effect work?

The grounding effect requires a continuous conductive pathway from the earth, through the sole and inner materials, to your skin. In Mitochondriak shoes, this pathway is created by graphene in the rubber sole, pigskin inside the shoe and conductive silver thread.

Graphene is an electrically conductive carbon based material. When it is integrated into the sole, it allows the sole to conduct rather than behave like a completely insulating layer.

The conductive path continues through the inner pigskin layer. Pigskin is structurally similar to human skin and helps distribute the electrical connection across a larger part of the foot.

Silver thread connects the individual conductive parts of the shoe. Together, these materials create a continuous path:

Earth → graphene sole → silver thread → pigskin interior → foot → body

The effect depends on the surface beneath your feet. The shoe cannot create grounding by itself. It enables conductivity when you stand or walk on a surface that is itself conductively connected with the earth.

What makes the shoes barefoot?

Barefoot shoes are designed to interfere with natural foot movement as little as possible. They usually have a thin and flexible sole, a low profile and a wider front that allows the toes to spread rather than being pressed together.

Your big toe plays an important role in balance, stability and propulsion while walking. A narrow shoe can push it inward and reduce the area through which the foot interacts with the ground.

A systematic review of habitual barefoot walking and running found differences in foot shape and biomechanics between habitually barefoot and habitually shod populations. Adaptation should nevertheless be gradual. If you have spent years in rigid, cushioned shoes, the muscles and tissues of your feet may need time to adjust.

The black sole does not show ordinary dirt as quickly as a light coloured sole. The textured underside also provides more traction than a completely smooth sole and helps reduce slipping on common surfaces.

They are suitable for ordinary daily walking, city use, parks, grass and easier natural surfaces. They are not designed as hiking boots for rocks, steep terrain or technically demanding trails.

 

What materials are Grounded barefoot shoes Mitochondriak® made from?

The shoes combine graphene, rubber, pigskin, silver thread and microfibre synthetic leather. Each material has a specific function related to conductivity, protection, comfort or maintenance.

The microfibre upper is simple to clean. With the black version, ordinary dirt can usually be wiped away with a damp cloth or wet wipe.

The material resists ordinary moisture, but the shoes should not be treated as specialist waterproof hiking footwear. Prolonged soaking, deep water and harsh terrain may reduce their lifespan.

 

On which surfaces does grounding work?

Grounding works best on conductive natural surfaces that contain moisture and are directly connected with the earth. Grass, soil, sand and moist natural ground are generally suitable. Highly insulating surfaces may interrupt or substantially reduce the conductive connection.

Suitable surfaces include:

  • Grass
  • Moist soil
  • Sand
  • Natural earth paths
  • Some unsealed stone and concrete surfaces in contact with the earth

Surfaces that usually provide little or no grounding include:

  • Plastic flooring
  • Vinyl
  • Laminate
  • Dry insulated wooden floors
  • Thick rubber surfaces
  • Many sealed indoor floors

Dry asphalt may also provide little meaningful conductivity. In that situation, the shoes still function as ordinary barefoot footwear, but the grounding pathway is limited by the surface beneath them.

 

How do you choose the correct size?

Grounded barefoot shoes Mitochondriak® use standard EU sizing from EU 36 to EU 46. You can begin with the size you normally wear, but measuring your foot and comparing it with the size chart provides a more reliable result.

When choosing the size:

  1. Place your foot on a sheet of paper while standing.
  2. Mark the heel and the end of the longest toe.
  3. Measure the distance between the two points.
  4. Repeat the measurement for both feet.
  5. Use the measurement of the longer foot.
  6. Choose a size that leaves approximately 1 cm of additional space.

The extra space allows the toes to spread naturally and prevents them from touching the front of the shoe while walking.

The width and fit can be adjusted through laces extending along most of the upper. The shoe should hold the heel securely without compressing the toes.

Choose your size without unnecessary risk

Use the size chart on the product page and leave approximately 1 cm of space beyond your measured foot length. If the selected size does not fit, undamaged shoes can be returned or exchanged within the applicable 30 day period.

How should you use and care for grounding shoes?

Use the shoes for ordinary daily walking and introduce them gradually if barefoot footwear is new to you. Begin with shorter walks and allow your feet, calves and lower legs to adapt before wearing them for an entire day.

  • Clean gently: Wipe the upper with a damp cloth and allow it to dry naturally.
  • Avoid washing machines: Aggressive washing can damage the conductive materials and adhesives.
  • Do not dry on a radiator: Excessive heat may deform the shoes.
  • Avoid demanding terrain: They are not hiking or climbing footwear.
  • Do not use near high voltage equipment: Grounding products should not be used in electrically hazardous environments.
  • Do not wear them during thunderstorms: Seek safe shelter during lightning activity.
